EXCLUSIVE: Madison Beer On Her Missguided Collection

New York-born singer and songwriter, Madison Beer first found her name trending on Twitter back in 2012 after Justin Bieber tweeted Beer's cover of Etta James’s 'At Last' to his then 25 million followers. She was just 13 years old at the time. Fast-forward six years and Beer is now signed to the same record label as Bieber, has over 10.7 million loyal Instagram followers of her own, walked the spring/summer 2017 catwalk for Dolce & Gabbana alongside Hailey Baldwin, Stella Maxwell and Sara Sampaio. And now, the singer-songwriter has launched her very own 63-piece capsule collection with Missguided, as part of its #babesofmissguided movement, which is available to buy from Tuesday April 3. Following in the footsteps of Jourdan Dunn, Baddie Winkle and Pamela Anderson with the collection, we met Beer during her sold out European 'As She Pleases' tour and got an exclusive sneak peek at the full collection ahead of the launch. What were your hopes for the collection when you first started the design process? I wanted people to get a feel of my style. I wanted this collection to emable people to dress these outfits up with heels and a leather jacket, but also be able to wear them with sneakers and a denim jacket. I hope people take away that it’s comfy but easy to dress-up. Can you describe your collection in just 3 words? Comfy. Cute. Fashionable. What do you hope people will feel when they wear the collection? Confident. I hope that I did a good job making something that everyone can wear in their own ways. I’m really excited to see how people style certain pieces from the collection. I’m excited to know that my fans are going to be able to say that their clothes of from my Misguided collection. What's your favourite item from the collection? The fannypack – it’s super cute – functional and big. I’m hoping I’ll see people wearing it at Coachella. What are your favourite spring/summer trend that you're already wearing? I’ve been cutting my denim jackets a lot. I had so many oversized ones and have literally just been chopping them in half and making them cute and cropped. That’s actually why I have a few cropped jackets in my Missguided collection. I love them, they’re so cute especially when you’re wearing them with jeans. What items do you think every girl should have in her wardrobe and make-up bag? Sweat pants and a matching hoodie. It’s all I wear. If I’m in a rush I think, “black pants, black hoodie”. It’s so easy for on-the-go. I love those matching sets, I’m obsessed with them. For my make-up bag, I’d definitely say concealer. It’s a good thing to always have in your bag. I cannot tell you the last time I was out and thought "If I had a concealer right now I’d be the happiest person alive". Plus, if you ever have a pimple pop-up and you ask someone else for one it’s always three shades too light. You just need the perfect shade in your bag ready. What is currently on your shopping wish list? A pair of white platform Dr Martens. I recently just got a black pair but I’d love them in white too. You're known as being independent, outspoke and empowered - who are your idols? I have a lot of people who inspire me. Anyone who is an activist, isn’t afraid to speak their mind, get out there and speak about things that most people are afraid to. The March For Our Lives protest was such a powerful moment. Gun control is such a serious problem right now in America. So, anybody who speaks up inspires me because I don’t think a lot of people do that. It's always changing celebrity wise, but at the moment I’d say Ariana Grande. She hasn’t been on social media for months and I just think it’s so dope that she doesn’t care about it and can just go away for so long. I love that. I’m trying to do the same thing at the moment and not post as much. Does the pressure of having such a big social following ever effect you? For sure. It makes me more conscious of how I go out and about during the day, especially if I need to get an Instagram photo and know I have to dress a certain way. I also feel like it affects me, reading peoples comments and seeing things people say. They can obviously hurt but I have pretty thick skin at this point. Can you tell us one rule or quote you live by? It may sound a little depressing but I really like: “This is your life and it’s ending one minute at a time.” It’s from Fight Club as well as one of the lyrics from my song 'Tyler Durden'. Obviously, it sounds depressing and morbid but it’s also true. You have to be proactive in your life. It could end any second and you don’t know how much time you’ve got left on this planet, so you’ve got to make the most of it while you’re here. I think I always try and live my life that way. You’ve got one of these things and you don’t know when it’s going to be over so just do it. First walking down the spring/summer 2018 catwalk for Dolce & Gabbana, now you've released your own Missguided capsule collection, what's next in the fashion sphere? I’m excited about this at the moment. I love being creative and designing.
